Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a therapy based on neurobiological wisdom and mindfulness with profound psychological benefits. It helps desensitize and reprocess distressing events and feelings.

What is Brainspotting?
Brainspotting was developed by David Grand, PhD. in 2003. It taps into the body’s natural self scanning and self healing abilities. It utilizes visual orienting and somatic awareness to access the subcortical brain to identify, process and repair emotional stress, heal the root of trauma, as well as emotional/mental pain and distress. As a result, neuroplasticity occurs within the brain, new neural networks are created and developed, bringing about drastic positive changes at the root of our pain and distress.

Benefits of Brain spotting
Brainspotting accesses and integrates parts of the brain and body that traditional talk therapy cannot access. As a result, it is not unusual for the healing of emotional, mental and physical pain through Brainspotting to be faster and more profound than traditional therapy modalities. Brainspotting is a unique method where you don't have to speak about your traumas to experience its healing power. Benefits include reduced negative beliefs, alleviates intense negative emotions, improved quality of sleep, increased ability to communicate and set boundaries, enhanced creativity, improved focus, and decreased body pain.

What happens in a Brainspotting session?
I help you identify an issue you want to work on. We look for the corresponding feelings or activation in your body. From there we find the “Brainspot” which is a point or points in your visual field. From there you notice what shows up and process the thoughts, feelings and emotions associated with the brainspot. During Brainspotting, talking is minimized in order to support the brain in accessing the subcortical space where trauma is stored. We use time before and after Brainspotting to talk, strategize, improve coping skills and make a plan for in-between sessions. Bilateral music is often used to help deepen the process and provide attentional flexibility. It’s common for your brain and body to continue processing the session for severals days following a session.
